![]() First, it placed the baby boomers squarely at the center of the suburban universe. The idea that a woman’s most important job was to bear and rear children was hardly a new one, but it took on a new significance in the postwar era. Advice books and magazine articles (“Don’t Be Afraid to Marry Young,” “Cooking To Me Is Poetry,” “Femininity Begins At Home”) urged women to leave the workforce and embrace their roles as wives and mothers. The suburban baby boom had a particularly confining effect on women. These houses were perfect for young families–they had informal “family rooms,” open floor plans and backyards–and so suburban developments earned nicknames like “Fertility Valley” and “The Rabbit Hutch.” By 1960, suburban baby boomers and their parents comprised one-third of the population of the United States. Bill subsidized low-cost mortgages for returning soldiers, which meant that it was often cheaper to buy one of these suburban houses than it was to rent an apartment in the city. ![]() Almost as soon as World War II ended, developers such as William Levitt (whose “Levittowns” in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania would become the most famous symbols of suburban life in the 1950s) began to buy land on the outskirts of cities and use mass-production techniques to build modest, inexpensive tract houses there. The baby boom and the suburban boom went hand in hand. As a result, many Americans felt certain that they could give their families all the material things that they themselves had done without. In many ways, they were right: Corporations grew larger and more profitable, labor unions promised generous wages and benefits to their members, and consumer goods were more plentiful and affordable than ever before. Many people in the postwar era looked forward to having children because they were confident that the future would be one of comfort and prosperity. And just 8 percent of married women in the 1940s opted not to have children, compared to 15 percent in the 1930s.) (In 1940, the average American woman got married when she was almost 22 years old in 1956, the average American woman got married when she was just 20. Older Americans, who had postponed marriage and childbirth during the Great Depression and World War II, were joined in the nation’s maternity wards by young adults who were eager to start families. Most likely, however, the postwar baby boom happened for more quotidian reasons. Others have argued that it was a part of a Cold War campaign to fight communism by outnumbering communists.ĭid you know? In 1966, Time magazine declared that “the Generation Twenty-Five and Under” would be its “Persons of the Year.” What explains this baby boom? Some historians have argued that it was a part of a desire for normalcy after 16 years of depression and war. Step 2: Aquire four iron ore blocks and one pile of redstone dust. While it lived, Microraptor probably looked like a starling wearing flares. These were clearly traces of long, flat and asymmetric plumes, much like those that keep today’s flying birds aloft. The double wing aids in maneuverability and steep dives. The double "shoulder" (though neither joint is actually a shoulder) forms the B of your birds wings. It then homes in on promising targets detected by the snakes, and shrugs them off, diving into the ensuing explosion of activity to find prey. The docile sidewinder on the hard point still had the innate reflex of orienting towards prospective heat sources, which gave another benefit to the night hunting B-bird.įor reasons of balance, the B-bird often waits for one sidewinder to attach to each wing before taking off. So B-bird adapted by developing the B-plumage, with no hard-to-cling-to plumage in the middle, just bone, skin and sinew, a hard point, if you will. B-bird meanwhile benefited because the ruckus caused by the sidewinders dropping into treetops gave them opportunity to ambush some critters that normally kept a low profile. So the snakes adapted to not obstruct B-bird overly much. This was actually a bonus for the snakes as they thus gained easy access to treetops where a good harvest of nestlings awaited. The B-Bird was too big for this tactic, so it took the snakes aloft, loosing them after a struggle. There was this little inedible snake (let's say a sidewinder, because those are heat seeking species) that snuck up on and entangled birds' wings in the night to exhaust them and finally eat them. Application ExamplesĪmong numerous other applications, the use of SeQuant® ZIC®-HILIC columns has been recommended by the US FDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) in its methods for the analysis of melamine ad related potential contaminants. Furthermore, HILIC is easy to combine with a wide range of detection methods, and boasts improved sensitivity with some of these techniques, such as electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). This results in more efficient separation. Thus, it unites the benefits of aqueous mobile phases with separation based on normal phase principles in which more polar compounds respond with higher retention. Simply put, HILIC is a normal-phase type of separation but uses reversed-phase type eluents. HILIC or hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography is a high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) technique for separation of polar and hydrophilic compounds. Kawachi et al., Journal of Chromatography A, Vol. “In particular, the zwitterionic phase ZIC®-HILIC showed better selectivity for the test samples than the other phases.” Their conclusion was that the selectivity of SeQuant® ZIC®-HILIC was higher and more versatile than that of all other stationary phases. Alternative choices for separation of polar hydrophilic compounds include SeQuant® ZIC®-cHILIC with complementary selectivity, and SeQuant® ZIC®-pHILIC for higher pH stability. The columns have been used in numerous methods for a variety of compounds, such as acids and bases, anions and cations, carbohydrates, metabolites, metal complexes, amino acids, peptides, protein digests and many more. Its favorable retention and robust performance have made SeQuant® ZIC®-HILIC one of the most popular HILIC columns throughout the world. The 5 turns figure is then divided into 365 days to arrive at 73 days of inventory on hand. Total inventory turnover is calculated as: The related information is $8,150,000 of cost of goods sold in the past year, and ending inventory of $1,630,000. The Hegemony Toy Company is reviewing its inventory levels. If standard costing is used, the standard cost applied to an inventory item may diverge from its actual cost. The method for allocating overhead to inventory may change, such as from using direct labor hours as the basis of allocation to using machine hours used. For example, some items that were charged to expense as incurred are now allocated. The contents of the cost pools from which overhead costs are allocated to inventory may be altered. ![]() There are several ways in which the inventory turnover figure can be skewed. Problems with the Inventory Turnover Formula This is known as the inventory turnover period. Thus, a turnover rate of 4.0 becomes 91 days of inventory. You can also divide the result of the inventory turnover calculation into 365 days to arrive at days of inventory on hand, which may be a more understandable figure. The formula is:Īnnual cost of goods sold ÷ Inventory = Inventory turnoverĪ more refined measurement is to exclude direct labor and overhead from the annual cost of goods sold in the numerator of the formula, thereby concentrating attention on just the cost of materials. If the ending inventory figure is not a representative number, then use an average figure instead, such as the average of the beginning and ending inventory balances. To calculate inventory turnover, divide the ending inventory figure into the annualized cost of sales. The latter scenario is most likely when the amount of debt is unusually high and there are few cash reserves. However, it may also mean that a business does not have the cash reserves to maintain normal inventory levels, and so is turning away prospective sales. When there is a high rate of inventory turnover, this implies that the purchasing function is tightly managed. In both cases, there is a high risk of inventory aging, in which case it becomes obsolete and has little residual value. When there is a low rate of inventory turnover, this implies that a business may have a flawed purchasing system that bought too many goods, or that stocks were increased in anticipation of sales that did not occur. Doing so can substantially increase the investment in inventory. The purchasing manager may advocate purchasing in bulk to obtain volume purchase discounts. A pull system that only manufactures on demand requires much less inventory than a "push" system that manufactures based on estimated demand. The inventory accounting method used, combined with changes in prices paid for inventory, can result in significant swings in the reported amount of inventory.įlow method used. Some portion of the inventory may be out-of-date and so cannot be sold.Ĭost accounting. Inventory may be built up in advance of a seasonal selling season. The following issues can impact the amount of inventory turnover: It can be used to see if a business has an excessive inventory investment in comparison to its sales, which can indicate either unexpectedly low sales or poor inventory planning. The inventory turnover formula measures the rate at which inventory is used over a measurement period. ![]() So you’ve found what you’ve been looking for and you’ve had it delivered to your door, but what do you do now?
